SUICIDE STATISTICS
- Suicide is the ninth leading cause of death in
Ohio. More than 1,200 Ohioans commit suicide each year.
- Nearly 20% of high school students in Ohio have
seriously contemplated suicide.
- Suicide is the 3rd largest killer of youth ages
10-24.
- As many as 25% of adolescents and 15% of adults
consider suicide seriously at some point in their lives.
- One person dies by suicide every 17 minutes.
- In persons age 65 or over who die by suicide:20%,
see a doctor the day they die 40%, see a doctor the week they
die 70%, see a doctor the month they die 12 out of every 100,000
persons die by suicide.
- Suicide rates are highest for elderly men.
- Many suicide attempts occur under the influence
of drugs or alcohol.
- Women attempt suicide more often, but men are
more likely to die due to lethal methods.
- Most suicidal persons don't want to die, they
just want the pain to stop.
RISK FACTORS
The number one risk factor for suicide
is depressive illness. Individuals who struggle with depression
have physiological issues. They often feel unable to solve their
problems and when untreated, depression can lead to intolerable,
endless and emotional pain.
